Loot Crate Review: Why Loot Crate Makes the Best Gift Idea

Whether you’re looking for something for birthdays, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, weddings, or just to show you care, Loot Crate is one of the best options. This is a subscription box, but there are options to buy past crates as a one off and you don’t need to sign up to the full 12 months at a time just to get one crate every now and then.

We love Loot Crate in our house. It comes every month and we’re always excited to see what’s in the boxes. This is one of those mystery box subscription services, so you have an idea of a theme but that’s about it.

I thought it would be time for a Loot Crate review. This isn’t about any particular month – although I will start doing that – but about Loot Crate as a whole. Loot Crate really does make the best gift idea.

Easy to Use Site to Sign Up for Loot Crate

I have to say that the best thing about the company is the easy to use site. With just a few clicks, you can sign yourself up to receive a month’s subscription. And you get to cancel at any time, so you don’t need to sign up for a whole year in one go. There are options for signing up for extra months if you want to save some money, but you have to pay for the whole cost upfront. We just opt for each month.

Loot Crate is delivered anywhere around the world. We’ve had it in both the UK and Canada. There are sometimes an issue with delivery, but that’s more the delivery companies than Loot Crate. As soon as there’s been an issue, Loot Crate will get back to us and organise for a new box to be sent out or work with us to get the delivery company in line.

If you just want to browse at the old crates, that’s easy. You can buy individual items or previous months’ boxes in the Loot Vault. We’ve been able to get all the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mini tiki mugs thanks to the Loot Vault – we’re just missing Shredder, since it’s currently out of stock.

Something for All Interests

At first I worried that there would only be something for certain interests. There is a lot of focus on current movies and TV shows, such as Assassins Creed, Dr. Strange, and Supernatural. This could have lost focus on some of the other elements of geeky worlds. One thing that I will say Loot Crate does, though, is offer something for all.

There are books, T-shirts, dresses, collectibles, and more available. Some of the items we’ve ended up giving away – they make excellent standalone gifts for people – and others we’ve kept safe on the shelves. There are some that we wear almost daily and others that only get pulled out for special occasions.

Loot Crate never just focuses on one TV show or movie per mystery box. The focus is on a theme. For example, October 2015 had the “Time” theme. There was something from Back to the Future and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure included. One of the themes had Supernatural, The Simpsons, and more included in one box!

While there have been times that the themes made us question a box, we haven’t been disappointed with the items instead. There is always one that is worth the cost.

Loot Crate

Always Worth the Value

We’ve tried to work out the value of the mystery boxes. Some of the items are exclusive to Loot Crate. That was certainly the case with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tiki mugs last month. That makes them far more valuable than the prices attached to them.

When the whole boxes are put together, even with items you could get elsewhere, the boxes are worth the money. Just last month, the book was retailed at $30+ and the tiki mug was around $15. We pay around $40CAD for a monthly box, so we’ve made the money back with just two items.

A Few Too Many Pop Dolls

I like to include something negative in reviews. In this Loot Crate review, it’s about the Pop Dolls. While I love them and I would really like the whole collection, Loot Crate has started to include almost one a monthly box. I’d actually prefer a bit of variety from the dolls.

This is something that has changed a little in more recent months. There are a few different items sitting on our shelves now, but we have a huge collection of Pop Dolls that we couldn’t have necessarily bought in the stores.

I can deal with this downside, though. The T-shirts and book items make up for the odd Pop Doll too many.

Loot Crate Review

When you want to get a gift that is going to be appreciated and useful, Loot Crate is something you want to consider. You can just get the one box as a gift or you can sign up to a subscription if you want. The subscription is certainly worth it – just be careful that you don’t want all the goodies for yourself!
